2014 North American Alpaca Show: CCNF Championships & 1st Place Finishes
For the first 10 years of the NAAS’s existence we helped (ok, truth in advertising: mostly Jennifer helped, while I schlepped our kids around more than usual throughout the month of March) to actually organize and run the show itself. For the past 3 years though, we have just been plain old exhibitors at the NAAS, albeit ones that arrive early on Thursday afternoon and then assist with color-check the next day. I still chock it up to a combination of Stockholm Syndrome and, though it pains me to admit it sometimes, the fact that we love Kevin and Scott, our silly friends who took the over the show’s management.
Whether it is because of our familiarity with the show itself, its relatively close proximity to us in terms of travel time (closer even than the Green Mountain show in October), or just the great competition that the NAAS has historically produced, it has all led us to view the North American as a lower-cost proving ground (compared to Nationals or the Futurity) and as such we tend to arrive, um…with numbers shall we say? This year was no different as we loaded up both our large trailer, as well as our 16 footer and brought down a mix of 44 alpacas — all juveniles and yearlings — with 41 of those being animals we produced here ourselves at CCNF. Yes, one could argue that bringing that number of animals to any show should be viewed as just cause for being forcibly committed to an institution but with at least 7 handlers on standby and only two show rings to go into (ahem!), it felt like a relative breeze after coping with 4 simultaneous show rings a couple of weeks prior at Nationals. All good!
We quite frankly had very high expectations for this show string at the NAAS coming off of our results in Harrisburg. The yearlings in our string, in particular, had really matured and grown out beautifully over the course of the winter and as should theoretically be the case every year, this was unquestionably the deepest show string we had ever produced in our 17 years of breeding alpacas. I won’t blather on too much more other than to say that they did not disappoint us in any way. For the majority of our yearling females at least, this show also represented the 2nd and final time that they would ever show at the NAAS. Safe to say that they went out with a bang…
