CCNF Legionnaire, Lot #7 at the Breeders Edge Auction
So as you might have heard, we have a very nice young Herdsire that will be headlining the upcoming Breeders Edge sale the weekend of 8/23 down in Virginia! If for some reason you travel in alpaca circles and you hadn’t heard that yet (and for starters, where the heck have you been?!), trust me when I say that you will be thoroughly sick of hearing about it by the end of this month. Apologies in advance…
CCNF Legionnaire’s sire is our 2013 & 2014 Futurity Herdsire of the Year, Snowmass Matrix Majesty. Majesty is a powerhouse of an alpaca male who has worked wonders in our breeding program, siring multiple Champions and Judges’ Choice winners in colors from white to dark brown. Legionnaire’s dam, CCNF Magdalena, is equally as important to the equation though, and the reality is that this is one of the few times in our farm’s history that we have ever parted with a member of his maternal line.
When Nancy Ogan of Double “O” Good Alpacas first approached us a few years ago wondering whether we’d ever be willing to put up a marquee male for the Breeders Edge, our first reaction was, “yeah, perhaps…but he has got to be really special.” The reality is that almost 18 years into owning and breeding alpacas, we’ve been around the block a time or two. We have learned the hard way, that it’s just not worth trying to sell a male at auction unless it’s an animal we truly believe in and that can stand on its own merits. Well suffice it to say, that by the time Legionnaire was a yearling in the summer of 2013, we knew that we finally had the right guy for the Breeders Edge! A magnificent balance of elite fiber characteristics, a fantastic frame, presence, and with deep proven genetics on both sides of his pedigree that give his future owner(s) a very high probability that Legionnaire will pass his amazing traits on into his progeny. There is not much more one could ask for!
Though we have said this again and again since officially deciding last fall that we would put our young Champion up for auction, it bears repeating yet another time: Legionnaire’s maternal line is one which we generally hoard and it is not by chance that we have retained 3 of his female maternal siblings, plus two of his nieces, here for our breeding program. That means that counting his Champion dam Magdalena, we will have 6 different females from that line birthing out crias here in the summer of 2016. Simply put, it is the most valued maternal line in the CCNF foundation herd, with a track record second to none. Though having said that, it is also precisely because of Legionnaire’s maternal line now being so locked in at CCNF, combined with the fact that we fully control his all-world sire, that we are now proudly able to offer this superlative young Herdsire for sale at the Breeders Edge! Anyway, if you’re looking for a world-class Herdsire, check our boy out! Trust me, you wont be disappointed.
