Some big news heading into the 2012 breeding season: for the first time in over 4 years CCNF Archangel will again be open for outside stud services! After talking it over with our friends and co-owners at Tripping Gnome Farm Alpacas, breedings to the Arch will be offered at $4,000 with a $500 discount available for drive-bys.

Why breed with this extraordinary Herdsire though? We certainly get it that 4K is a considerable chunk of change in today’s market place yet for the right female, an Archangel breeding is worth every penny. Simply put he has shown time and again that he gets the job done. No male in our farm’s history — with the obvious exception of his sire Snowmass Legacy Gold, you do the math — has had the same long term influence on our breeding program. His first crop of crias born in 2006 made clear that his kids were almost always going to be both his phenotypic clones as well as inheriting not just his propensity for fineness of fleece but also retention of that fineness over time. That pattern has held true in the ensuing years.

It is not by chance that it is Archangel daughters that now make up the backbone of our light colored female foundation herd. Yes, many of them were former show champions when they were juveniles and yearlings, yet several others that were never quite good enough to make our show strings, nonetheless proved very quickly that they too had the characteristics to earn a slot here in our breeding program. When the likes of SuperNova, Precocious, and Elite Legend breed our best light/white females, there’s an above average chance that those females were themselves sired by you-know-who. Want further proof of Archangel’s dominance? All things being equal the show string that is being prepped for the North American in a couple of weeks (gulp) contains eight alpacas that are either his children or grandchildren. He really has nothing left to prove, his legacy is quite secure even if his story is far from being finished.
