CCNF Abby Rose, Lot #9 at the Breeders Edge Sale
It seems to be every couple of years now that we have to dust off the old, “Cas-Cad-Nac Farm doesn’t really breed greys alpacas, do we?” line as we then go on to either privately list or consign to an auction, what is actually a pretty spiffy animal! This year’s entry in this little sub-plot of ours, CCNF Abby Rose, is of course from that same grey family as all of the others before her, which is after all, the only true grey line we have here. If you’re not going to have many, try to make the few that you do have great? Something like that, I guess…
Maternal Line
Maid Marian, the family matriarch and Abby’s dam, was purchased way back in 2002 for the original purpose of seeing whether Legacy Gold could sire grey progeny. Though Marian and LG never did produce a grey cria for us, Marian has gone on in the subsequent 13 years to produce some of the best animals this program has seen. From grey Champion, CCNF Smoke Ring, who is now a working Herdsire for our friends at Arrow Acres Alpacas in NJ, to Abby’s older sister, Jasmine, who has joined her dam in our foundation herd and whose own daughter, Tigerlily, was the RC Brown Female at this last April’s NAAS, to CCNF Marick, who ended his show career in 2014 with 3 Championship banners as well as being the Judges’ Choice Huacaya Male at that year’s AOA National Show (Marick, by the way, is newly arrived in Norway, waiting to begin his career working for his new owners at Alpakka Lista)! For being one of only 2 token grey production females in a herd of 200+ made up mostly of lights and fawns (her older daughter Annabeth being the other), it’s safe to say that Marian has done very well by us. So well in fact, that I’ve argued that if we are lucky enough to ever get another grey female out of her (I know that might be asking a bit much as Marian quickly approaches her 15th birthday), it would probably behoove us to actually keep that one to replace her aging dam. A worry for another day though!
Paternal Line
It does take two to tango, does it not? One of the things we love about Abby Rose is the way she’s pulling in some of the most potent lines from our farm’s genetic base. Of particular note on Abby’s paternal side, is the presence of another of our breeding program’s super-dams, SHRA Virtual’s Reality. Abby’s sire, CCNF Wayfarer — who is likewise slumming it in the Viking-land with our new buddies at Alpacajoy of Norway — though the paternal son of CCNF Royal Ring of Fire (Snowmass Royal Rose x our beloved 5Peruvian Margarita), is at least just as importantly, descended from Reality, his maternal grandam, who first came to us as a juvenile from the 2001 AOBA National Auction in Portland, OR. Reality’s family line has been at the heart of our colored breeding program ever since, and though the grandam herself has almost certainly had her last cria for us, as recently as 2014, her son, CCNF Magistrate, was tearing up the show circuit including being crowned Brown Male Champion at the 2014 Futurity (where he dueled his paternal brother…CCNF Marick, who took RC that day). Wayfarer, though in many ways a genetic dead end for us here as both the maternal grandson of Legacy Gold and the paternal grandson of Royal Rose – the whole reason we were willing to part with him, was nonetheless our go-to guy when breeding with our wee grey female herd. I will freely admit my dear Sjøllis that we are missing your new boy a bit in the summer of 2015, as he had become a bit of a specialist here on his birth farm!
CCNF Abby Rose brings all of that great history from both sides of her pedigree together into one neat, typey package! Born in September of last year, Abby has, at minimum, fall and spring show seasons ahead of her for her new owners, having already won 2 firsts and a Championship this spring in her first couple of times out at the NAAS and the Futurity. By the way, the young Herdsire that we sold at last year’s Breeders Edge sale, CCNF Legionnaire, went on to win Championship banners for his new owners at both the 2015 AOA Nationals, the Great Western Alpaca Show (where he was also the Judges’ Choice Huacaya Male) and at the 2015 Futurity, unquestionably the toughest show in North America. Just saying. We make a real effort to put something special into these sales, and we feel that Abby is no exception. Like all maiden females we sell here, CCNF Abby Rose comes with a full reproductive guarantee and a non-transferable breeding to any CCNF Herdsire when she is of age.
