Herd Health Days

It's called taking one for the team. Herd Manager, Kimberly McAllister, poses to show what happens when you get in the line of fire of one seriously pissed off (and very pregnant) CCNF Opal.

I think we just set a speed record for a full herd health session with all 230 animals getting their Ivomec shots, any scheduled vaccines, ADE paste (in the case of anyone < 1 year of age), as well as their bi-monthly toe nail trims over the course of a couple of days. With the entire crew here — Maxy was even there exchanging needles on the syringes — helping out today we whipped through the final 2/3rds of the herd in just 3 hours and all told it probably took us no more than 5.5 total to do everyone (Jen, Kim, Sam, and I had pecked away at the Main Barn on Monday where the juvi weaners and the visiting females are). Of course as the photo at left shows, the session today was not without its casualties at least where our pride was concerned. Jason let go of Opal after she had had her work done and apparently Ms. Thing had quite a bee in her bonnet relating to the pedicure she had just been given. Unfortunately poor Kimmy was standing just a few feet away and presented an excellent target for Opie’s tantrum. The good news was that 30 minutes later you couldn’t smell it at all. I swear. Kim might want to use the heavily soiled setting on her washing machine though to get that one out. On the plus side: no more toe nail trimming until September!

  1. Bi-monthly nail trims? I don’t see them-the nails, that is, growing THAT fast. I hate them long like some people let them go…but you have the experience…

    1. Hey Denise,

The truth is some probably could be trimmed every 2 weeks while others could easily go 6 months, a pretty wide variation!

  3. Nice job Opal! But she’s got nothing on 6PSunshine. Our SOP is to give her an injection and then run like hell. Poor Kimberley probably has some fond Sunshine memories as well!

BTW, a currently open Sunshine is intent on stealing the new Archangel cria (he looks just like her last LG baby). She would actually break up the nursing sessions with the biological mother. We had to separate them!

  4. Hey Kim, I think green is your color!!! But next time hide behind Ian. The time I spent a herd health day with all of you, he came out the cleanest for some reason!!!!

    1. Hey!? I read these you know. The reason I come out he cleanest is…oh never mind, this would undoubtedly degenerate quickly! See you soon…
