Miscarriage Today
So the reality when one breeds 65+ females is that you get to see a bit of everything over time. This morning the barn cleaning crew found a 6 month fetus on the north side of the Arena that we were quickly able to figure out had come out of Golden Bell, one of our older LG daughters and King of the Ladies’ maternal aunt.
Over the years Bell has had a couple of live crias for us including a beautiful SuperNova daughter, BellaNova, who’s in the foundation herd here as well. Unfortunately for all of us, since having a rather rough dystocia several years ago though Bell has been unable to hold a pregnancy to term and this morning’s find represents her 2nd late-term miscarriage in a row. It’s not unreasonable to suspect that her cervix was compromised at the time of that dystocia and is now unable to handle the strain of a full pregnancy. That would obviously be a bummer, though by no means unheard of.
Though I’m sure we’ll be checking her uterus out on US to make sure everything looks ok in the coming weeks, for now the plan is that Bell will get the winter off. Our magnificent vet, Susan Johnson, once pointed out years ago that veterinary medicine often gets undue credit for what are really just the inner workings of Mother Nature and Father Time. We shall see.
