Rain, rain go away…
Yuck! I mean I get it that there is apt to be some karmic payback for spending time away on a warm Caribbean island but couldn’t it have held off for at least a few days?
My first thought this morning upon coming back upstairs and hearing the rain/sleet hitting the roof in our living room was whether or not we had the various culverts that cross under our roads and connect all the drainage ditches here on the farm clear of snow? Many a March have we spent prodding ice and snow, out of one in particular, all while standing in thigh-high freezing water. Not so much fun.
This winter in particular though, without a major thaw event prior to now, has left the entire farm with a huge quantity of snow stockpiled on the mountainside. When it rains hard like this all that water not only needs a place to go (and can’t go into the frozen ground) but also melts some of the snow more quickly than normal creating what would be a flood event if we weren’t at 1000′ of elevation built into the slope of a mountain. This too shall pass though. There is sunshine and mild weather forecast for later this week so with our southern exposure and temps in the 30s we should start to see the snow pack reduce a bit and hopefully in more of a controlled fashion. Safe to say we are not taking our juvenile/yearling fleece shots today either…
I so enjoy your daily postings of “life on the Farm”… I so love alpacas, and am working towards owning my own farm..
Thanks for reading Tammy, best of luck with everything! -Ian
