Snow Day!

The view from Ian's office window, January 12, 2011: snow does not scare me, I am The Arch!

Maybe it’s because I’m still a child at heart but I find that I get as giddy as my kids do whenever school gets called off. This morning the three of us made celebratory pancakes.  All snow days are made better by an early morning sugar high after all! Of course some of my happiness could stem from the fact that school getting cancelled also saves us some 50 miles of driving? In any case, as you may have heard, the majority of New England is getting whacked with a good old fashioned blizzard today. The boys are outside sledding in 8+ inches of fluffy stuff, Jen is up at her office in the Main Barn tackling paperwork, and I’m here tucked in my office getting ready to take on any number of website shenanigans. More on that later though…

The Toolcat, which handles 90% of our snow plowing duty, conveniently decided that it needed a new alternator yesterday morning. Thankfully our local dealership had one in stock and was able to make a farm call to get our baby all fixed up just in time yesterday afternoon. Though our farm tractor has a much bigger plow on it that we could have used for the macro clearing were we in a pickle, it is really a tool of last resort and plowing with it is somewhat akin to doing neurosurgery with a butter knife. It’s so big that it ends up also removing a layer of the road along with the snow.

Though I did have tentative plans to make a delivery run to Virginia starting early tomorrow morning I have a sneaking suspicion that the truck, trailer, and I will be staying put until the region is dug out. We shall see.
