The Belated 2022 Showtacular Post!
Happy November! At least as happy as one can be in a generally dark and brown month around here. You know, I’ve lived in Vermont for roughly 39 of my 51 years on this earth and though I am fully smitten by our little state, this region generally, and its many seasonal rhythms, there will never be a time when I celebrate sunsets at 4:30 PM…sorry. Having just spent the better part of a week with my parents at their place in Guatemala celebrating my Mom’s 80th birthday, the seasonal darkness is the first thing that hits you when you return north. Though I will grant that this is an uptown problem if ever there was one. At least November brings us the much-anticipated gathering of family next week, to say nothing of the planet’s most-watched (if ethically challenging) sporting event taking place in Qatar. Welcome distractions aplenty!
The first significant snowfall of the season this past Tuesday is at least making it slightly less brown around here, even if it is something that caught us a bit flat-footed with our winter tires not yet mounted on our everyday cars. Thankfully, the same annoyingly smug EV drivers also happen to own a couple of one-ton diesel trucks unironically (still can’t haul a 32′ trailer with a Model X, pendejo), which did already have their studded snow tires mounted on them, courtesy of our uber-competent farm manager. Arlis Cummings, Jr. to the rescue. It’s a theme that one suspects will be ongoing.
So, about those alpaca shows in Syracuse a couple of weeks back though! While it was nice to get out again into a halter ring for the first time since the Futurity last April, we were disappointed not to see greater competition at the shows themselves with just shy of 200 animals present. In the end, the greatest highlights for us personally that weekend, were spending time with friends and family — our son, Sam, drove up from southern NH where he and his fiancee live nowadays to help us show — and also getting to show again in front of senior Judge, Jude Anderson, who was back working a stateside event for the first time since before the pandemic. Huge thanks as well to our friends Sue Monat and Dell Rodman for their help over the weekend, without whom none of that would have been possible! Recurring CCNF show victim, Dave Serino, was absent and missed this time around, at home suffering from a long-time-coming back injury (the dude has probably played hockey — no doubt with a certain Serinoish edge — since he could walk) but word on the street is that Daver is virtually pain-free 2+ weeks post-spinal surgery. We will endeavor to drag him along to the show venue to be named later come the spring of ’23.
Where Syracuse, October 2022 was concerned: we came, we walked in circles, and we won some stuff. In between, we got to hang out with our friends and one of our kids, something which we never take for granted at this point in their, or our, lives. It was all good. Details below…
