The Running of the ‘Pacas

I’m still learning how this whole blog thing works but if you click on the link at the bottom of this post you can see a cool Quicktime video of Jen and Kimberly herding a large group of our females up the hillside to the Arena for herd health day. Admittedly this was from June (not today), hence the grass is green as opposed to brownish.

At the beginning of the birthing season we have a huge group of females (unbred yearlings and pregnant females due later in the year mostly) that rotate around our outer paddocks living beneath the sun and stars with nothing more than pasture, a water tub, and a mineral feeder. Contrary to what the grain salesmen would have you believe the animals do just fine without their pellets. I’m sure the fact that the species thrived for thousands of years in South America without an extruded crunch was just dumb luck…

  1. I wish I could herd mine like that! Now I know why Princess looks excited when she sees us driving our RTV!
